Information for Families

Want to know what healthy developmental milestones look like in young children?

Picture

The journey of your child's early years includes many developmental milestones for how he or she plays, learns, speaks, and acts.  On this page, you'll find resources to help you learn about healthy developmental milestones for your child. Talk with your child's doctor about these milestones. Not reaching these milestones, or reaching them much later than other children, could be a sign of a developmental delay.

Download the Tracking Milestones brochure (pictured on the right) in English or Spanish to print and take to your pediatrician to discuss your child's healthy development.

Want to know what autism looks like in young children?

Take a look at a 9-minute video narrated and produced by Dr. Rebecca Landa of Kennedy Krieger Institute in partnership with the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Bringing the Early Signs of Autism Spectrum Disorders Into Focus (2013, run time 9:03 minutes) consists of six video clips that compare toddlers with no signs of ASD to toddlers with early signs of ASD and includes an explanation of how the specific behaviors exhibited by each child are either suggestive of ASD or typical child development. Learn more about the video here.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed tools and information to help you keep track of your child’s development and get help if you’re concerned as part of the national "Learn the Signs. Act Early." campaign.  Click here to access their Information for Families.
